Rationale

Careers education and guidance programmes make a major contribution to preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

A planned progressive programme of activities supports pupils in choosing 14 – 19 pathways that suit their interests and abilities and help them to follow a career path and sustain employability throughout their working lives in Britain and beyond.

What is Careers Education and Guidance?

The CEG programme recognises the need for young people from Year 7 to develop career management skills so that they are better prepared to take their key decisions – Key Stage 4 Options in Year 9 and their Post 16 Options in Year 11.

Reviewing the success of our Careers Programme

Our careers programme has been very successful in ensuring that our students are well prepared and aware of the choices they have available to them. Year 11 students have feedback to us regarding how helpful their careers and SLT interviews are in ensuring they pick the correct pathway following the completion of their GCSEs. In 2022, 97% of Y11 students remained in either education or employment.

In 2022, internal data shows over 95% of students remained in either education or employment after Year 13. Students say they feel that the UCAS and Apprenticeship programmes allow them to make informed decisions about the right course, university and job opportunities for them. The work experience programme is also very positively received by students who like the fact that they can source their own placements, giving them experience of the application phase as well as the actual profession.

Our careers programme continues to develop each year and we are excited about adding further interactions with employers and links to subject areas to the programme.

Our careers programme is under thorough and constant review to ensure that all pupils have equal access to opporuntites and support. The next full review will take place in May 2024.

The school organised a Career’s week which called upon guest speakers to talk about Criminal Law, Insolvency (Accounting), Structural Engineering, Dermatology (Medicine) and Investment Banking. Students from Year 11 and Year 12 chose as many topic areas that interested them, and then some.
In the Accounting talk, the speaker talked about how he worked in a small accounting firm with about 70 employees. His day to day work involved dealing with bankrupt companies and how they would manage their assets to resolve these issues. He then explained that to get into a similar profession, you don’t even have to take an accounting degree at university.
I was particularly interested in the talk about medicine after binging all nine seasons of House M.D. So when it came, I was baffled by how you would specialize in the medical field. I found that apart from the 5 years of university, you would need to spend two years in a foundation course and experiment around with various specializations to see which one interests you the most and then think about post-graduation. It sounds like all the doctors are trained for an exhilarating episode of House M.D.
The talks enabled people to know more about the various career opportunities and I’m sure that even Mr Scott and Mr Nielsen learned a thing or two! Career’s week has been
quite educational and helped show the path to university.
